The judges said the winning recipes include a balance and variety of ingredients including those that give you energy, will look after your heart and keep you generally healthy whilst being delicious and enjoyable.

Justin Clark, Food Development Chef from Nestle Professional, said: “At such a young age, it’s great to see pupils thinking about healthy food and putting together their own recipes that are nutritionally balanced, vibrant and visually appealing. I would like to thank everybody who entered the competition and look forward to judging the next one.”

Councillor Stuart Bodsworth, Executive Member for Children & Young People at Stockport Council, added: “The entries were of a very high standard, and I would like to thank all the young people for entering such a wide range of interesting recipes. Thanks also to Nestle Professional for sponsoring the competition and we look forward to working closely with schools and suppliers on future initiatives.”

Pupils entered the competition via the dedicated school meals website www.myschoollunch.co.uk   which has a wealth of information on all aspects of healthy eating. The four winning recipes can be found on the My School Lunch website. In order to meet the Government’s Food and Nutrient Based Standards as applied by the School Food Trust, some ingredients or volumes have been changed or substituted by Solutions SK School Meals, in the Primary School Autumn/Winter menu.

Solutions SK  provide a school meals service for over 100 primary and secondary schools in Stockport and serve around 3 million school meals annually. The School Meals team works closely with the ‘Every Child Matters’ programme and supports the government’s ‘Million Meals Campaign’.

The meals are often themed and pupils are encouraged to get involved as much as possible to ensure they are aware of the benefits of certain foods.
