Proud of Stockport Award Winners Announced

Stockport’s outstanding and extraordinary citizens were honoured at the ‘Proud of Stockport’ awards in the Town Hall on Tuesday 7 February. The Stockport citizen awards – now in their fifth year - were set up by the Council to encourage a stronger sense of pride and community spirit in the borough.

The awards recognise individuals, groups or teams who go out of their way to make Stockport a better place. People from all over Stockport were able to make nominations by posting forms and completing online application forms on the awards’ website www.stockport.gov.uk/proudofstockport
At the ceremony, all winners were presented with a trophy and commemorative certificate by the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Les Jones.
The award category winners are:

  • Ambassador for Stockport – rewarding someone who has helped to give Stockport a good name and improve its reputation.  Winner: John Blakeley
  • Best Street – rewarding the residents who help make their street a better place to live.   Winner: Quarry Road, Romiley
  • Champion for Young People – rewarding a person or group of people who influence children’s day to day lives in a positive way.  Winner: Maureen Wright
  • Community-Spirited Organisation – rewarding the Stockport organisation that puts a lot back into the community. Winner: Rainbow 88, Cheadle Hulme
  • Enterprising Citizen of the Year – rewarding adults who help their community.  Winner: Chrissie Ince
  • Good Neighbour – rewarding those people who go out of their way to be the best neighbour possible.  Winner: Ann Broadhurst
  • Green and Glorious – rewarding a group or person responsible for a great community clean-up or local environmental project.  Winner: Adswood Community Centre Management Committee
  •  Life Changing – rewarding someone or an organisation who has helped turned their own or other people’s lives around against the odds.   Winner: Arts for Recovery in the Community (ARC), Reddish
  • Sports Personality – rewarding those involved in sport in Stockport.  Winner: Hannah Whiteley
  • Volunteering Champion - rewarding individuals or groups of people who make a real difference to Stockport.  Winner: Café Unity, Heald Green
  • Young Citizen of the Year – rewarding under 18’s who help their community.  Winner: Joe Barratt

Councillor Dave Goddard, Leader of Stockport Council, said: “These awards really do prove that there are plenty of local people working hard for our area. Well done to all of our winners – each and every one of them has gone the extra mile to help make a difference. The Proud of Stockport awards show that community spirit and civic pride are both alive and well in our borough.”
