Primary Shool Pupils Help Parents Recycle

04 Nov 2011

Primary school pupils in Stockport have been helping their families to put the right thing in the right bin.

Stockport Council, working with education officers from Recycle for Greater Manchester, is visiting 13 schools to teach pupils about recycling. Pupils are then being asked to help their families put the correct items in their brown bin, for the chance to win a prize. A ‘Perfect Bin’ hanger is being provided for pupils to place on their brown bin on collection day.

Collection crews will then check the bins contain the right things and collect the hangers. All pupils with a ‘perfect bin’ will be entered into a prize draw to win £100 shopping vouchers, £1,000 for their school and class trip to the new visitor centre at the Bredbury Recycling Facility, courtesy of Recycle for Greater Manchester.

Councillor Shan Alexander, Executive Member for the Environment, at Stockport Council, said: “It’s really important that children learn about reducing, reusing and recycling from a young age. They can really get involved in helping their families recycle at home, which benefits the borough as a whole, as well as teaching them good life skills for the future.

“We’ve been delighted with the response so far – Stockport’s young people are really dedicated to making the borough a greener place to live. Good luck to everyone entering the competition!”

Everyone can boost the borough’s recycling by making sure they put the right items into their recycling bins. For more information about the Council’s ‘Right Thing Right Bin’ information programme visit www.stockport.gov.uk/waste or www.recycleforgreatermanchester.com
