People are being asked to take part in the ‘Zero Waste Challenge’ to try and reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste they throw away to ZERO in one month, for the chance to win prizes worth up to £150. The aim is to reduce the amount sent to landfill and raise awareness of different ways people can reuse, reduce and recycle.
Participants will attend an induction session, keep a waste diary and do weekly audits to assess how they could reduce their waste. The winner will be the person who produces the best diary, which can then be used to inspire others.
Michael Edge from Bramhall has just started the challenge. He said: “I’m enjoying the challenge so far. It’s really interesting to see how much non-recyclable waste our household produces each week. Wheelie bins have already dramatically reduced the amount we need to put in our black bin. Little things like buying chocolate with foil and cardboard packaging, instead of plastic packaging can help.”
Councillor Shan Alexander, Executive Member for Environment, at Stockport Council, said: “Well done to Michael and all the other zero waste champions for taking up the challenge. We want to hear from more people who have a passion for the environment and who are up for a challenge. It may sound like a daunting task, but they’ll receive help and support from EMERGE and get the chance to win prizes.
“It’s very important that we ultimately reduce the amount sent to landfill, as this avoids expensive charges and is much better for the environment long term.”
People are invited to a Zero Waste Induction Session on Wednesday 7 December, 2-3.30pm at Stockport Town Hall, Edward Street, SK1 3XE.
