Following routine inspections made by Stockport Council’s highway crews, the Council now has a programme of work to inspect and cleanse gullies on priority routes, ensuring that drainage and flooding problems are kept to a minimum.
This planned way of working reduces ad-hoc visits across the borough and offers the benefit of prioritising flooding hotspots within the area. The programme also allows for flexibility to respond to urgent reports of flooding and drainage issues on the highway.
Cllr Iain Roberts, Executive Member for Transportation at Stockport Council said: “Any number of things from leaves, to people placing items like car batteries and clothes down the drains can stop a gully from working, and we work hard to ensure that the gullies throughout Stockport are kept clear.
“This new way of working will be particularly beneficial as we have prioritised the most used routes reducing the risk of major disruptions caused by flooding.
“Residents can help by keeping an eye out for anyone who may be disposing of items down drains and reporting blocked gullies that are causing serious flooding or drainage problems to the Council.”
