Stockport's Street Lighting Crews are Streets Ahead

30 Nov 2011

As the nights are drawing in Stockport Council is taking proactive measures to repair street lights within the borough.

Launched as part of the Council’s new ‘Streets Ahead’ initiative, crews are taking preventative action by changing the bulbs in lights that are three years old to reduce the chance of any faults occurring and repairing any reported problems.
Since November 7th the team has already replaced over 320 bulbs, working at night to find and fix any lights before they are reported by residents.  The crews also use hand held devices to log repairs whilst on site and the up to date records will save them time to make more repairs.

Cllr Iain Roberts, Executive Member for Transportation, said: “With over 32,500 street lights in the borough to maintain we are taking a proactive measure to repair streetlights before they are reported by residents.

“Whilst we are doing everything we can to maintain the street lights in the borough, I would encourage residents to use the Council’s new online reporting form to report any faulty streetlights to us, so they can be repaired.

“Street lights contribute to improving safety and reducing crime, so by maintaining them, we are making Stockport an even safer place to live.”

In addition to the proactive repairs, Stockport Council has also agreed a contract with NPower to combat rising energy costs and get better value for money for residents. In implementing this, the Council has moved away from fixed “one-off” payments and is buying blocks of energy in advance, for lower prices to save the Council, and ultimately the tax payer money.
