‘Streets Ahead’ takes a look at the work which is taking place on the highway, from street lighting to road and pavement repairs to winter gritting. As well as keeping residents informed about the planned work being carried out by the Council the initiative will also try to involve local people in helping to keep the borough moving as the wintry weather sets in.
Cllr Iain Roberts, Executive Member for Transportation, said: “With an average of 33,000 vehicles using Stockport’s main roads each day, keeping the borough moving over the winter months means we all have to be prepared. Our crews are working hard to keep the roads, footpaths and street lights in good order and with help from residents we can reduce the impact that bad weather can have on our travel.
“Reporting problems are now even easier with new online forms on our website, there are details of gritting routes and your local grit bins and we’ve got some great winter travel advice on there too.”
Street lighting is one of the areas being tackled as the nights draw in. Crews are taking preventative action by changing the bulbs in lights that are three years old to reduce the chance of any faults occurring and repairing any reported problems. From November 7th a new team will be working at night to find and fix any lights before they are reported by residents
Following safety inspections, seven road repair crews are working on Stockport’s roads fixing everything from potholes to manhole covers, broken bollards to damaged flagstones. In preparation for this winter over 3,000 repairs have been made to the highway, with teams targeting the most popular routes first to reduce disruption to travel.
These crews are also on full alert for winter gritting, having stockpiled 4,500 tonnes of rock salt to make sure routes can be gritted thoroughly and grit bins filled for residents to use on local roads and pavements.
