Stay safe on the roads this winter

22 Nov 2011

As part of its ‘Streets Ahead’ initiative Stockport Council is reminding residents to drive safely when approaching roadworks in the borough.

The advice has been released to coincide with national Road Safety Week this week to ensure that road repair crews and road users are safe whilst out on the road.

Following safety inspections, seven road repair crews are working local roads fixing everything from potholes to manhole covers, broken bollards to damaged flagstones.

When approaching roadworks it is recommended that road users:

  • Keep within the speed limit - it is there for your safety.
  • Get into the correct lane in good time - don't keep switching.
  • Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
  • Be alert for works traffic leaving or entering roadworks.
  • Keep a safe distance - there could be queues in front.
  • Observe all signs - they are there to help you.

Councillor Iain Roberts, Executive Member for Transportation, said: “Our crews are working hard to keep the roads, footpaths and street lights in good order and it is a highest priority that we keep crews and road users safe”.

“We would like to remind residents to take care when approaching roadworks, especially as the darker nights and wintry weather sets in.  If we work together we can make Stockport’s roads safer for all.”

‘Streets Ahead’ takes a look at the work carried out on the highway, from street lighting to road and pavement repairs to winter gritting. As well as keeping residents informed about the planned work carried out by the Council the initiative will also try to involve local people in helping to keep the borough moving as the wintry weather sets in.

In preparation for winter, over 3,000 repairs have already been made to the highway, with teams targeting the most popular routes first to reduce disruption to travel.
