Stockport Council shows true grit

07 Feb 2012

Whilst Greater Manchester escaped the worst of the weather this weekend the gritting teams were still out in force in Stockport gritting over 14 routes to help keep the borough moving.

These include the main ‘priority’ roads and footpaths such as ‘A’ roads, major bus routes, busy district roads and steep gradients on Friday evening and again on Saturday with higher level routes and other steep roads being treated again on Sunday.

Councillor Iain Roberts, Executive Member for Transportation said:  “The team has been working flat out to keep the roads as safe as possible and as part of our Streets Ahead initiative we’ve been putting the latest information on our website and on twitter to keep people up to date.

“However, we experienced problems in some areas this weekend, particularly hilly locations, where parked cars prevented the gritters getting down the road.  I urge people to think about where they choose to park when we are faced with severe weather as the gritters can’t do their job if the road has limited access. With over 420 km of priority roads to treat we want to make the most of the time we have – the quicker we can grit the routes the quicker and safer we can all travel.”

According to The Met Office the risk will move from snow to one of ice and freezing fog this week. The Council is monitoring the forecast and today the team is carrying out ice grits to main priority routes plus trailer routes and car parks.
