Highways Maintenance

Streetscene has the responsibility for maintaining all adopted highways within the borough. To do this, the roads and footpaths are inspected on a scheduled basis, and defects are recorded to allow repairs to be scheduled.

Dependant upon need, maintenance methods range from patching a pothole to the complete reconstruction of a section of road.

Should you wish to report any damage to a road or pavement or if you need to make a claim against the Council for personal injury or damage to vehicles from roads, highways or pavements in Stockport contact us by ringing 0845 833 4444 or email streetscene@stockport.gov.uk

Highways Maintenance is split into the following sections:

Projects

The Projects section is responsible for delivering most of the junction improvements and Traffic Management Schemes within the Borough. The Improvement Schemes are designed within Environment & Economic Development Services and then passed onto the Projects Section for construction.

At any one time there could be as many as 15 Schemes being constructed, ranging from a major Traffic Signal Junction, to a small Traffic Calming Table.

The Projects section also works closely with Developers, Schools and other "non-Council" bodies to deliver such things as school playgrounds, new housing estate junctions, car parks etc.

Operations

The Operation section is responsible for carrying out all 6000+ reactive maintenance work orders generated by the Co-ordination Team every year. They also build many of the highway maintenance and project schemes generated throughout the year.

The team consists of over 50 member carrying out jobs such as: flagging, kerbing, blockpaving, footway reconstruction, pothole repairs, gully cleansing, drain clearance, white lining, drainage repairs and winter maintenance.

Recycling

The Operations section has been carrying out recycling of highway arisings for over five years. We currently recycle over 40,000 tonnes per year, resulting in the production of various types of fill material.

During the last financial year over 80% of all materials excavated from highway maintenance schemes was recycled into other useable materials.

Drainage

The Streetscene Operations section constructs and repairs surface water sewers and carries out maintenance and repairs to various watercourses, culverts and highway gullies. The section also has a dedicated team of staff keeping the borough's highway gullies cleaned, which amounts to over 90,000 gullies emptied every year.

Weed Control

Streetscene is responsible for weed control on the highway and each year schedules a total of three complete sprays of the borough.

This is timed to maximise it's efficiency and treatment usually takes place between the months of March and as late as October, dependant on weather conditions.
