Walls & Fences
Homeowners and occupiers are responsible for the maintenance of boundary walls and fences on private land that adjoins the public highway.
When reports are received relating to these issues we:
- Allocate your enquiry to the Area Highway Officer
- Inspect the site and consider the following issues; safety of the wall or fence and obstruction of the pavement and ownership of the adjacent land. If the site is dangerous, as a duty of care, we will make it safe.
- If appropriate, we then write to the occupier asking them to make safe/repair the wall or fence.
- If the area has not been cleared within a reasonable period, we will then serve an enforcement notice
- If there is still no action, we will arrange for the area to be made safe and will charge the occupier to pay for the costs
Solutions SK, working on behalf of the local authority, will maintain and repair:
- Walls supporting the structure of the highway - these are called Highway Retaining Walls
- Walls retaining land that has been excavated in cutting to form a highway parapet wall on bridges
- Walls providing a safety barrier for example a steep drop at the other side of the wall.
If you have a query regarding a damaged or unsafe wall or fences on the highway, please contact us.
