Q. How do I request the estimation service?

A. Contact the Streetscene Hotline on 0845 833 4444 requesting a quotation. An officer will visit the property within 10 working days. A written response detailing the total cost and methods of payment will be sent out by post shortly after the site visit.

Q. How do I arrange for the construction service?

A. If you have already received a quotation you wish to accept, please sign the authorisation forms and return them to the address stated on the letter.

Q. What work is involved?

A. The kerbs will usually be replaced with 3 low units and a transitional kerb at each side. Generally the surface will be rebuilt in bitmac for the full width of the footpath. Only where all other crossings in the street are in concrete flag will the flags be re-used on a new foundation. The work is normally carried out in two stages.

Q. How long does it take?

A. On receipt of your acceptance of the quotation, the work will commence within 12 weeks.

Q. Can I use my own contractor?

A. Yes, however you will require a "Highways Private Opening Licence" which should be applied for by an accredited contractor. For further information please contact the Streetworks Co-ordination section on 0161 474 4807.

Q. Will I need planning permission?

A. Yes, if the property is on a classified highway. Planning permission is usually required, for which there is a further charge. Details can be obtained form the Planning Office on 0161 474 3659.

Q. Do I need a driveway/ hardstanding?

A. Yes, the vehicle crossing will not be built until you have an adequate driveway in your front garden. The driveway must be built using an appropriate material eg. Bitmac, paving slabs etc.

Q. Do I need permission if the property is owned by Stockport Council?

A. Yes, you will need permission to park a vehicle in your garden. Please contact your local Housing Office for further information.

Q. What if a tree on the pavement is affected by the dropped crossing?

A. We will advise you if a tree needs to be removed or roots need to be cut to accommodate the crossing.

Q. What about underground services (water/gas/cables) or a street lighting column?

A. If these are affected by the proposed crossing, the cost for lowering or moving apparatus may be included in the final quotation. If there are any other areas which are still unclear please do not hesitate to contact the Streetscene Hotline on 0845 833 4444.
