School Scene's Employee Scoops Top Award

A Solutions SK Ltd employee has scooped a much sought after Bronze award at the first ever 'Finishing Touches' Local Authorities Catering Association conference.

School Meals Area Manager, Karen Hargreaves gained the award in the 'Decorated Novelty Cake' category. Every part of the cake had to be edible and part of the judging process included a taste test.

Karen is a master baker extraordinaire and has produced numerous cakes for various occasions such as weddings, retirements and birthdays. She has even created an Elvis themed cake!

The award winning cake was a 10 egg Madeira sponge with a buttercream and jam filling. It was an elaborate creation based on a primary school meal on a flight tray, including a glass of milk, with all the decorations made from edible fondant icing. It even included a mini Deano the Dinosaur, the School Meals team's mascot.

Senior members of the Craft Guilds of Chefs formed the judging panel at the conference which was held in London.

Councillor Mark Weldon, Executive Member for Children and Young People, said: "I would like to congratulate Karen on her achievement. Events and competitions such as this give people involved in School Catering the chance to display their talents and raise the profile of school meals in Stockport."

School Scene is part of Solutions SK Ltd, Stockport Council's wholly owned company.
