Council's job scheme helping people back to work
A jobs scheme run by Stockport Council is helping borough residents get back into meaningful employment.
The Council’s Stockport into Work scheme and the Future Jobs Fund aim to help people who have had long periods away from the work place to find a suitable job.
So far the scheme has helped 142 borough residents get back into work since October 2009.
Stockport resident Donna Scanlon benefited from the scheme by securing a permanent role with Solutions SK School Meals Catering team.
Donna was looking to get back to work after ten years bringing up her children. With experience in cleaning and office work Donna contacted an advisor at the Jobcentre to discuss her options.
The advisor at the Jobcentre introduced her to the Council’s Back to Work scheme. There was an opening for a job as a General Assistant in the kitchen at Cheadle Hulme High School and Donna started straightaway.
After 6 months in the role Donna was offered a permanent position which she has accepted.
Donna said: “Working in a school really fits in with my home life. The ladies I work with are fabulous; they have made me feel really welcome. I am so glad I have had this opportunity.”
Councillor Martin Candler, Executive Member for Customer Focus, said: “The Council’s Back to Work scheme has been very successful in helping find employment opportunities for people who have been out of work for long periods. It’s really encouraging to see the success of this scheme and we wish Donna all the best in her new role.”
